Prenj

Prenj Mountain is located in northern Herzegovina, between the valleys of the Neretva, Drežanka, Bijela, and Neretvica rivers. Due to its steep peaks, deep valleys, and distinctly alpine landscape, it is often referred to as the "Herzegovinian Himalayas." Its highest summit is Zelena Glava, reaching 2,115 meters above sea level. Prenj is renowned for its exceptional natural beauty, rich flora and fauna, and numerous springs, mountain lakes, and rock formations. The mountain features eleven peaks rising above 2,000 meters, making it one of the most impressive high-mountain massifs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its numerous cliffs and vertical rock faces host a large number of alpine climbing routes of varying difficulty, making Prenj one of the most important mountaineering destinations in the region. Thanks to its unique geology, karst phenomena, and well-preserved ecosystems, Prenj represents one of the most valuable natural areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a favorite destination for hikers, mountaineers, and nature enthusiasts.

Container

Pištet / Pod Vršinama Shelter is a simple open mountain shelter located on Prenj, beneath Velike Vršine and above the Bijele vode area, in the direction of Poljice and the inner part of the mountain. In different hiking sources, it appears under several related names, including Pištet Shelter, Vršine Shelter, Kontejner pod Vršinama, or Zaušlje, reflecting the use of local names for the same wider area.

The shelter is a steel shipping container adapted for overnight stays in the mountains, with space for up to 10 people. It is always open and serves as a practical refuge for hikers crossing this remote part of Prenj, especially on routes between Ruište, Bijele vode, Vršine, Poljice, Botini, Lupoglav, and Zelena Glava. Its northern side is reinforced with rocks, helping to stabilize the container and protect it from strong mountain winds.

The usual approach is from Ruište via the Adnan Krilić mountain hut at Bijele vode, and then onward toward Vršine / Pištet. From Bijele vode, the shelter can be reached by a marked trail in about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on conditions. A water source is located near the shelter, making it an important overnight and emergency refuge in this exposed central part of Prenj.

Container

Container Poljice is an open mountain shelter located in Donje Poljice, in the inner part of Prenj. It stands in a remote valley surrounded by Ovča, Lupoglav, Vjetrena Brda, Kapljuč, and Botini, and serves as an important base for multi-day hikes and ascents in this part of the mountain. The shelter was placed by HGSS Mostar and is equipped with basic sleeping space and a wood stove. It can accommodate around 6-8 hikers. Drinking water is not reliably available at the shelter, so water should be planned in advance; nearby sources such as Cmiljevac / Cmiljkac or a cistern may be used depending on conditions. The most common approach is from Ravni, taking about five hours on foot, while another route connects it with the container shelter below Vršine.

Mountain hut "Bijele vode"

Mountain hut

Bijele vode Mountain Hut is located on Prenj, at the Bijele vode site above Ruište, at the entrance to the central part of the mountain. The hut bears the name “Adnan Krilić” and is one of the most important starting points for routes toward the high peaks of Prenj, especially Kamenac, Botini, Zelena Glava, Otiš, Osobac, and onward toward Jezerce, Tisovica, and the inner part of the mountain.

The easiest approach starts from Ruište, following a well-marked hiking trail through forest and meadows, and takes about two hours on foot. Because it is relatively easy to reach from Mostar and Ruište, Bijele vode is often used as a base for one-day and multi-day hikes, mountaineering courses, winter ascents, and alpine climbing camps. From the hut, there are beautiful views of the surrounding Prenj peaks, while the location is already high and remote enough to give a real sense of entering the high mountain terrain of Prenj.

The first mountain hut at Bijele vode was built in 1950. It was destroyed during the war and later rebuilt between 2007 and 2009 through the work of PSD “Prenj” Mostar. Today’s hut is a stone-built facility with overnight capacity for around 30-40 hikers. Its position makes it an important logistical base, allowing early starts toward Prenj’s highest peaks and providing a safer place to stay in this demanding mountain area.

Mountain hut

The Jezerce mountain hut is located in the heart of Prenj, at about 1,650 m above sea level, near the Jezerce spring and below Taraš peak. Because of its position, it is one of the most important bases for ascents toward Zelena Glava, Otiš, Osobac, Taraš, and other peaks of central Prenj.

The hut has a long history. A shelter known as Katharinen Hütte existed in this area during the Austro-Hungarian period, and in 1933 the Sarajevo mountaineering society “Prijatelj prirode” built a smaller hut that served hikers for decades. During the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the old hut was burned down and destroyed. The idea of rebuilding it was revived in 2005 by Prenj enthusiasts gathered around Zona-2000, and the reconstructed Jezerce hut was officially opened on July 9, 2016.

Today, the hut is built of stone and wood, with a common room on the ground floor and sleeping space in the attic. It can accommodate about 20 people and also serves as an open mountain shelter for hikers, climbers, and ski tourers moving through the central part of Prenj.

Mountain hut

Mountain hut Rapte, officially named “Senad Muhibić - Dundo”, is located on the northern side of Prenj, above Konjic and below Konjička / Prenjeva Bjelašnica. Managed by PD “Borašnica” Konjic, it is one of the main mountain bases for routes entering Prenj from the Konjic side. The previous hut on this location was destroyed during the war, and the present hut was later built by PD “Borašnica”, opening in 2017. Today it offers accommodation in shared rooms and serves as a comfortable starting point for ascents of Velika Kapa, Konjička Bjelašnica, and longer traverses toward Tisovica, Vrutak, Jezerce, and the central peaks of Prenj.

Mountain hut

The Ruište mountain hut is located above Mostar, on the pass between Prenj and Velež, in an area known for its Bosnian pine and black pine forests. Thanks to its easy road access and its position at the entrance to Prenj, Ruište is one of the most important starting points for routes into the central part of the mountain.

Ruište is usually reached from Mostar via Bijelo Polje, in about half an hour by car. Because of this, it is popular not only with hikers but also with day visitors looking for fresh air, forest, and a mountain atmosphere close to the city. The area is especially important for routes toward Bijele vode, Zelena Glava, Otiš, Botini, Vršine, and the deeper interior of Prenj.

Over the years, Ruište has had several mountain facilities that served as bases for staying and setting out into the mountains. The older large hut was completely destroyed during the war and was not rebuilt, while the smaller hut was repaired, expanded, and later renovated. Today, the hut serves as a place for rest, gatherings, day trips, and preparation for hikes into Prenj. Its greatest value lies in its location: it allows relatively quick access to the high parts of Prenj while remaining easily reachable from Mostar.

Mountain hut

The Vidrine Grude mountain hut is located on Prenj, below the slopes of Cetina / Cvitina. It serves as a shelter and starting point for routes in the northwestern part of Prenj, especially toward Cvitina, Uborak, and the surrounding rock faces.

The old hut at this location burned down in a wildfire that affected the Vidrine Grude area in August 2015. After that, a mountain hut was re-established on the same site and is listed in newer hiking sources as the Vidrine Grude mountain hut of NVO “Prenj-Cetina”.

The hut is most commonly reached from the direction of Glogošnica, via the villages of Ravna and Bijela, in about four hours of walking. Nearby is the Ženska Voda spring, about two minutes from the hut. The hut can accommodate around 10 people and has a solid-fuel stove. According to Planinarenje.ba, the hut is locked, and the key can be obtained from locals in the village of Bijela; the listed contact is the Glogošnica Mountaineering Section.

Mountain hut

The Vrutak mountain hut is located on Prenj, in the upper part of the Tisovica valley, below the Otiš and Zelena Glava massif. It is an important base for routes through Tisovica and toward central Prenj, especially for ascents of Zelena Glava, Otiš, Lupoglav, Velika Kapa, and other peaks in this part of the mountain.

The hut can accommodate about 10 hikers. Nearby are the Vrutak and Lončić springs, but they may dry up in periods of drought, so water should be planned in advance. In hiking descriptions, the hut is often associated with PD Borašnica from Konjic, and it is advisable to check access and overnight conditions before visiting.

Vrutak is a useful base for multi-day hikes on Prenj, especially when approaching from the Idbar - Tisovica direction or when traversing between Jezerce, Tisovica, Rapti, and the ridges leading toward Prenj’s highest peaks.
